Bike Safety Week

On the last day of school in May we hold a bike rodeo for Keystone Elementary School. The kids ride through a bicycle obstacle course. The Police, Firemen are present as well as the Sheriff’s McGruff, the Crime Dog with car. A Police Dog demonstration is presented. The event is presented by 40 volunteers and we give away 25 bicycles, helmets and toy from Toys For Tots.

After the bike giveaway we feed approximately 600 kids hots dogs, chips, drinks and cookies. The school is always very supportive and provides the tables, chairs, ice, and teacher volunteers.

Target House Lunch

Each December the club sponsors and serves lunch at the Target House, which is part of St Jude Research Hospital. We feed over 100 patients and families whose children are being treated at St Jude. We partner with Toys for Tots and present the children with gifts. Please help support this endeavor by contributing to the Optimist Club when you see us as stores and around the city!

Oratorical Contest

Area students compete in an oratorical contest with the local winners going to state and international contests. Winners at those level receive scholarships and other prizes.

Youth Appreciation Week

Youth are selected to attend an Optimist Club meeting and tell us about themselves, their activities and goals. We also talk about their achievements and their plans for the future. This gives them a place to practice their public speaking and are given recognition certificates for their participation.

Respect For Law Program

An award is given every year to the top graduate of each of the Police and Fire Academies graduating classes. The award is presenting during the graduation by the North East Memphis Optimist Club’s president, Don Thompson.
